Song Translation: Saki – yonige

TL requested/suggested by maskofsin

Eyy, I got a request! Technically not my first as someone did ask me before for some transations for Kinoko Teikoku songs a while back, but people more learned in the language were already on that, so I didn t feel the need to pile on with my messy TLs.

But, this is the first request that I’ve fulfilled so yes, if you do have requests for song translations, again, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll most likely do it unless someone else already did one for it 😀

沙希 (lit. saki) is the seventh track in yonige‘s first full-length album girls like girls.

The song paints a story of parting between two people — and in anticipation of their separation they “dance the monkey’s dance”, perhaps for the last time, before everything is forgotten; no one else would know, so they dance in the safest place in the world, as the headlights’ lights swim on the ceiling.

沙希, made up of the kanji (sa for “sand”) and (ki for “hope”) is a name traditionally given to girls in Japan. One could assume that the song is in reference to a person named Saki, who is very close to the persona to whom the words of the lyrics belong. She (I only say that it’s a female because of the vocals) might be singing this song to a far-away friend as she reminisces about their last moments together. The last couple of lines, to me at least, seem to allude to the idea that this dear friend of hers is not only in some far-away place, but rather in the furthest place imaginable; the great beyond.

No matter the case, “parting [is indeed] such sweet sorrow”, as is the words of the great Shakespeare. yonige have always had a penchant for making oddly relateable songs — be it the good times or the bad; from breaking up with your ex by throwing an avocado at ’em to wanting to be an asexual snail to escape the trappings of love. Plus, they sound really really good doing it.

  1. Yo!

    Thanks for doing my request!
I could only make bits and pieces from the song, but I never expected it to be about a “parting friend”.
Also, Meiji Dori is an important street that crosses Shinjuku, Harajuku, ikebukuro and other important parts of Tokyo ( in case anyone wonders).
I guess yonige-san had a friend that she lost. And she is reminiscing their moments together, as they probably had their own “monkey dance”.
Or she just created it all from her head, who knows?

Fact is yonige is getting better and better. I hope I can see them live personally someday.

Thanks once again! I will be sure to request more stuff sometime!

    • No worries — happy to do it 😀

It’s a bit open to interpretation really, but the slightly somber tone and lines like “before we forget”, “before we drift away”, and “our memories together” was what ultimately led me to conclude that it’s about being separated from someone.

Yeah, I should put something about Meiji Dori as a TL note or something. Kind of a weird reference to be throwing out there, or at least I didn’t expect to see it as part of a lyric, lol

They really are. Definitely come a long way from “Coming Spring” (which is still a pretty darn good EP). I’d love to see them live too someday (some folks from Canada were lucky when they got ’em to perform there)

Haha! Sure thing, I’ll do my best if and when.

      • So, I’ve got this idea:

I’ll send you a list of songs that I love (and no one cares about translating) and when and if you feel like translating, these are my requests (and recomendations in case you don’t know these bands):

        Gravity

Once again, thanks a lot! I’ll be sure to read whenever you feel like translating!

        • lol because of all the links WP thought this was a spam comment so apologies for the rather late response :p

no worries, these are all bands that I’m actually familiar with (some of ’em were even on my regular rotation at one point in time, haha!)

KusoIinkai was a band that got my attention when I was in my Lyu;Lyu/cinema staff phase (which was a whie back) so it’s gonna be interesting listening to ’em again

Was a huge coaltar of the deepers fan after Mawaru Penguindrum aired, lol, but I kinda fell off it right after that

soko-ni-naru is awesome. I had pirorhythm stabilizer on-loop for the longest time (those backing vocals could raise the dead I tell ya)

The Oral Cigarettes I know of through anison mostly, but I hear the name tossed around when KinokoTeikoku and such is being discussed, so can’t go wrong there

I love daoko’s old stuff (you know, when we couldn’t see her face and stuff xD) HYPERGIRL and Dimension are pretty sweet (I still play the albums every now and again) I’m honestly surprised her older songs didn’t get as much hype after Suisei took off tbh

Thanks! I now have a list of things I can get to if I and when I’m in the mood to TL something. Haha!

          • No problem there!

Sometimes I think that you are me from another country, I thought that at least 1 band you would be new to you, but I was wrong.

Kuso Iinkai was probably one of the first japanese bands I heard and probably my all time favorite, around 2014. Bought lots of their CDs when I went to Japan in 2015. Had tickets bought for their last GPS concert in Tokyo (the one they even recorded) but due to my girlfriend health issues, had to come back earlier and missed that.
In 2014 online translators weren’t nearly as accurate as they are today (still not great, but you can at least have a good idea of what the songs are about). Yesterday I wasted some time on that and finally understood some songs.
Too bad they too changed a lot from the beginning. 恋愛下手の作り方 is my favorite album.

I also found out about COTD after mawaru penguindrum (great anime btw) and DEAR FUTURE is still my favorite song, though already has TL online.

Soko ni naru first and second album were pretty good, but I couldn’t enjoy metalin at all.

The Oral Cigarettes came to me on Noragami and I had the pleasure to see them live with LAMP IN TERREN (great aswell) and frederick (not so good IMO). Too bad they didn’t play any songs from オレンジの抜け殻、私が生きたアイの証.

Lastly, daoko is quite something. Unique voice and singing style. Arousing stuff. Suisei is probably my favorite song, along with Gravity and Dimension. Too bad she changed a lot now that she’s major. She released a song today that makes me feel like the old daoko is dead.

Anyways, thank you once again. It’s really nice to talk to fellow japanese music fans!

        • *replying here because WP nested comments get messy after, like, the 6th comment, lol*

Same, haha, but you’d be surprised — I got my jpopsuki invite from a fellow HumpBack/tricot fan over Twitter of all places, so at very least, know that we’re not alone in our taste in obscure Japanese music xD
One of my favorite pastimes is chain-searching bands/singers over at last.fm and trying out songs at random, so just by doing that I got exposed to a lot of stuff. I don’t know a lot of the more popular stuff though, ironically enough.

Oohh. Can’t say I’ve talked to someone who has KusoIinkai as their all-time favorite band — but more so because I don’t think I’ve ever talked to someone who /knows/ KusoIinkai, lol. It’s interesting because we started at markedly different paths; the first band that I really got into was SCANDAL back in 2010-2011. But as is the case with most bands when they get big, their music changes, and I lost quite a bit of my love for SCANDAL after their 6th album.

You’re lucky in having seen a band you’re into live. I’ve only see BACK-ON (unknowingly) and I only know one song from ’em. xD

MEMEME was what got me into daoko, and yes, the breath-y soutaiseiriron-esque vocals mixed with hip-hop is just hot, haha!

No worries! And yeah, likewise 😀

I always wanted to know what the lyrics says (I only know few words in japanese) cause the melody sounds really sad. But now i know thanks to you! 🤗💛
