人魚 (ningyo) [ lit. man-fish, mermaid ] is a song off of POLKADOT STINGRAY’s (at the time of this post) upcoming EP.
The song appears to draw some of its themes from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid”, with many direct allusions to the aforementioned work. For instance, turning, or dissipating into sea-foam is a reference to how Andersen chose to depict a mermaid’s death.
The scene of a one-sided love is switched and played around a bit in that the patient (in this case the mermaid) becomes infatuated with the doctor (the prince) that saved her — or, in the case here, just attending to her. Because the patient/mermaid doesn’t know how to love, she can no longer bring herself to live on; as the story goes,
“[…] if you do not win the love of the prince, so that he is willing to forget his father and mother for your sake and to love you with his whole soul and allow the priest to join your hands that you may be man and wife, then you will never have an immortal soul. The first morning after he marries another, your heart will break and you will become foam on the crest of the waves.”
POLKADOT STINGRAY is definitely a band to look out for (like a new age Tokyo Jihen for you J-music aficionados). I featured one of their songs in a previous post, but do check out their other stuff as well over here.
As always, these translations are far from perfect and I welcome any and all corrections/comments/critiques 😀
thanks so much! I’ve been looking for a translation of this song for so long, among their other songs as well. Could you do “心ここに在らず” from their new ep? It’s amazing! thanks so much for this
I put it up over at the PV’s comment section about a day or so after it was released, but it got buried real quick xD
If I can get my hands on it yeah, I’d love to!
Tokyo jihen was the first band that my mind automatically compared ^^
The Japanese music is always reboring ( reborning)
Thanks, love the band
